Jesus is Coming! (Are You Ready?)

His Promise to Us
We have this promise: For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord.
Today we take a look at what the Bible tells us about the promised return of Jesus, and examine what our response to this fact should be.

Get Ready! And Obey His Voice!
In Matthew chapter 25, Jesus tells three stories, illustrating what our response should be to the fact that he is coming soon, when we least expect him.
First, he tells the story about the ten virgins, five wise and five foolish. They were alike in every way except for one: the wise had plenty of oil, being prepared as if he would come any moment, while the foolish did not have enough oil, presumably assuming that, while he would indeed come, it would not be tonight. Jesus then says that we must watch and be ready, because we do not know when he will come.
Next, he tells the story of the man who entrusted his goods to his servants while away on a long trip. He gave five tallents to one, two to another, and one to the third. The first two made that with which they were entrusted grow, while the third was afraid and hid his master's money in the ground. The first two were commended, put in charge of more, and invited into his joy, while the third was stripped of what he had and was condemned. We learn that we must use what God has given us, no matter how small we think it is, for the glory of God and his kingdom, and he will reward us in the end.
Finally, Jesus tells the story of the sheep and the goats. He commends the sheep for feeding him when he was hungry, visiting him when he was sick and in prison, clothing him when he was naked, and inviting him in when he was a stranger. And he condemns the goats for not feeding him, giving him anything to drink, clothing him, inviting him in, or visiting him. Both groups asked, "When did we do these things to you?" And Jesus replied that whatever they did or did not do to the least of these, they did or did not do unto him. Let's take care that we do not become numb to the needs around us, for in the end, we will have to answer for how we treat Jesus through them.
The greatest need any human being has in life is the need to have their sins forgiven and to be made right with God. Without this, everything else is just a temporary comfort which will be quickly forgotten in the eternal hell. It is our calling and duty to reach out to those around us, showing the love of God in our actions, and pointing them to the source of all comfort and provision, and the only hope for their soul — Jesus Christ, the risen Lamb of God!
